Come Hike the Upper Catawba Falls with Us

Saturday, March 5 at 9AM:

Join the Swannanoa Valley Museum on a 6-mile strenuous, but beautiful hike to Upper Catawba Falls, a free-fall drop waterfall on the headwaters of the Catawba River near Old Fort.

We will meet at 9 AM at the Black Mountain Savings Bank, 200 East State Street, to carpool to Fortune Fields in High Rock Acres.

There are several stream crossings on the way to the waterfalls, so hikers will need to wear wool socks and bring a dry pair for the car ride back. Hiking poles are helpful for the stream crossings. Please also bring a bag lunch and plenty of water.

Cost is $10 for members of the Museum and $20 for nonmembers. Reservations are required. Call 669-9566 or email info@swannanoavalleymuseum.org for more information or to register.

Daycation ~ Caravan to the Secret Waterfalls

Wednesday, March 9 at 9AM:

Ride along with the Swannanoa Valley Museum to view a waterfall so beautiful and so secret we can't tell you the name. Located on private property, which the Museum has special permission to access, this spectacularly clear stream falls over a 30' high rock face into a deep, dark pool. A smaller falls downstream shoots off a huge, curved boulder into another blue-green pool.

This is a daycation and is suitable for nonhikers. To get close to the falls, however, participants will have to walk a short distance.

We will meet at 9 AM at Black Mountain Savings Bank, 200 East State Street, to carpool to the waterfall.

Cost is $35 for members and $50 for nonmembers. If you have a 4WD vehicle and can take three passengers, you may participate at no cost. Registration is required. Call 669-9566 or email info@swannanoavalleymuseum.org for more information or to register.

Museum Opening Scheduled for April 16th

Join us for opening day on Saturday, April 16. We will be open from 10 AM to 4 PM to celebrate our new exhibits.

100 Years of Scouting

This exhibit will honor the centennials of both the Boy Scouts (2011) and Girl Scouts (2012). Vintage uniforms and memorabilia collected from residents and the local Scout councils will be on display. This exhibit is sure to be nostalgic for visitors who have been active in these Scouting programs during their lifetimes and a way for present-day Scouts to appreciate the long history of their organiztions.

Brother, Brother, Brother, War is Not the Answer

Our Museums In Partnership themed exhibit for 2011 is part of a national commemoration of the sesquicentennial of the Civil War.  Although there was no battle action in the Swannanoa Valley, many men from the Valley served in the war, and we will have letters from them and their families as part of the exhibit.

Pathways from the Past, Pathways to the Future

This major update of the Museum's permanent exhibit will interpret the collection and the story of the development of the Swannanoa Valley since prehistory along the theme of "Pathways."

Our Sponsor

A small, but vital organization, the Swannanoa Valley Museum builds community inside and outside its walls. Until the Museum reopens on April 16th, I encourage you to take advantage our our hikes and Daycations, which take people into the mountains and valleys that surround us, often providing a living history lesson about the rich history and the environment in which we live.

If you aren't a member of the Museum, I invite you to become part of our wonderful family.  If you are already a member, I thank you for your continuing support of this valuable resource, and hope that you will take advantage of your membership discounts on hikes, Daycations, and retail purchases.

As Black Mountain′s oldest continuing business (since 1908) and its only locally owned community bank, we are very proud to be the sponsor of the Swannanoa Valley Museum′s e-newsletter.

Cheers!

M. Wendell Begley, President Black Mountain Savings Bank
