 | Become a Fan on Facebook
Alright, already, we've done
it! We've come kicking and screaming into the 21st century, thanks
to our new volunteer, Anne Chesky. We've had a Facebook page for
months now, but have done nothing with it, primarily because the Museum
director (that would be me, Jill) doesn't exactly get it when it comes
to social media, even though I know it works for many folks.
So thanks to Anne, we now have a
functioning Facebook page that will be interesting, informative, and
most importantly, there!
I invite you to become a fan of
the Swannanoa Valley Museum on Facebook, or at least to visit our page, where Anne has posted lots of neat
photos of our hikes and events, as well as images of the Museum itself. |

 | Cool Off in
the Depths of Linville Caverns
In the dead heat of summer,
there's a place not far away where you can cool down and also discover
the inner world of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Join thus for an SVM Daycation
to Linville
Caverns and Wiseman's View on Wed. June 23, and see our mountains
from the inside and the tippy top.
The day will start with
participants gathering at 9 am at Black Mountain Savings Bank to carpool
to Linville. At the Caverns, we'll have a guided tour, and you'll
have time to poke around their great gift shop. Bring a sweater,
and perhaps even a waterproof poncho--it gets pretty cool way down
there, and water drips from the cavern's ceilings. (This photo of
the "Wedding Rock" formation is from the Linville Caverns website.)
Cost for this Daycation is $15
for Museum members; $25 for non-members. If you'd like to join the
fun, please make a reservation by calling 828-669-9566 (leave a message
if no answer) or send an email to swannanoavalleym@bellsouth.net. |

 | Join Us for a Memorable
Fourth of July
Once again, the Swannanoa Valley
Museum will host a truly unique and memorable July 4th celebration on
its annual Fireworks Hike and Picnic up Sunset Mountain on Sunday, July
4th.
This is an ideal time for
families to share some good, old-fashioned Independence Day fun,
complete with hot dogs and watermelon, and watch the Black Mountain
fireworks show from a different viewpoint--from above!
The cost is $20 for Museum
members; $30 for non-members. Children under 12 are free.
Contributions are always appreciated.
Please make reservations as soon
as you can, as this is a very popular event. Call the Museum,
828-669-9566, or send an email to swannanoavalleym@bellsouth.net. |

 | Yet Another
Great Summertime Getaway
The Museum's "Daycations" are
designed to give folks a fun, playful "day off" from the norm, and
that's just what you'll have if you come along on our half-day float
trip on the French Broad River, on Wed., July 21.
This is not exactly an extreme
whitewater experience, but rather one that can be enjoyed by young and
old alike. Each raft will have a guide, and the trip includes a
delicious catered deli lunch.
The trip will begin in the
parking lot of Black Mountain Savings Bank, 200 E. State St., Black
Mountain, at 7 am to carpool to the outfitters, Blue
Heron Whitewater, in Madison County. Bring a hat, river shoes,
sunscreen, and holders to secure your eyeglasses.
Cost is $60 for Museum members;
$75 for non-members. Please make your reservations with payment by
July 10. Call the Museum, 828-669-9566, or send an email to
swannanoavalleym@bellsouth.net to let us know you want to go, and send
checks to SVM, P.O. Box 306, Black Mountain, NC 28711. |

Our
Sponsor
Did you know that the Swannanoa
Valley Museum is one of the largest membership organizations in eastern
Buncombe County, with more than 600 members on the roster?
We appreciate all of our
members, without whose support the Museum would not be able to
operate. We also try hard to give our members a "bang for the
buck." If you notice on the events listed above you'll see that
members receive a substantial discount on all of our events. They
have free admission to the Museum, and receive a 10% discount on
purchases at the Museum's retail counter.
If you are a member of the
Swannanoa Valley Museum, we thank you for your support. If you are
a former member, we invite you to rejoin and enjoy the many benefits of
Museum membership. And if you've never been a member, well, we
hope you'll decide to become one and share the cameraderie found on our
hikes and other events while at the same time having the satisfaction of
knowing you are helping to preserve and interpret the rich history of
the Swannanoa Valley.
I invite you to visit our
website: www.swannanoavalleymuseum.org, and to sign up for
membership either on the website or by sending your check to Swannanoa
Valley Museum, P.O. Box 306, Black Mounain, NC 28711.
As Black Mountain′s oldest
continuing business (since 1908) and its only locally owned community
bank, we are very proud to be the sponsor of the Swannanoa Valley
Museum′s e-newsletter. Cheers! M. Wendell Begley,
