Commerate the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War on our Swannanoa Creek Hike
On
Saturday, December 10th, as part of our Civil War 150th Anniversary
Exhibit we will host a trek along the Swannanoa Creek,
which has become a perennial favorite for winter hiking.
This
moderate hike is downhill most of the way and passes by the grave of a
Civil War soldier and the ruins of an old homestead. Hikers often view
trains on the nearby tracks, and there is a good view of the eastern end
of the Swannanoa Tunnel.
Meet: in the parking lot of Black Mountain Savings Bank at 9:30 am.
Pack List: Bring lunch, drinks, snacks, etc. Dress for winter weather and wear sturdy hiking boots.
Cost: $15 for Museum members, $25 for non-members.
Registration:
Reservations are required. As Anne will be on vacation from November
26th until December 10th, please reserve your space with our hike leader
John Buckner by calling 828-669-4300 or emailing jpb227@charter.net.
Christmas Tree Sale to Benefit the Museum
The
Artisan Gourmet Market, in partnership with Greenmeadow Landscaping,
has set up a Christmas tree lot next to the store and has invited local
charities to help sell the trees.
Volunteers
from the Swannanoa Valley Museum will be staffing the tree sale lot at
the Artisan Gourmet Market in Cheshire, Black Mountain from December
10th through December 16th, but you can buy your Christmas tree at any
time and DESIGNATE THE MUSEUM AS YOUR CHARITY OF CHOICE--which
means that all the proceeds from the sale of your tree will go straight
into the operating budget for the museum enabling us to offer even more
programming in 2012.
The
trees are locally grown, freshly-cut Douglas firs that range in size
from 5' to 9', although taller trees are available by special order. The
prices start at $25 and vary depending on the size of the tree.
Sales hours are Mon-Thur. 3:00 to 7:00pm, Fri. & Sat. noon to 7:00pm, and Sun. from 10:00am to 2:00pm.

Support Historic Programming with your End-of-Year Gift
Thanks
to you, 2011 was a great year for the Swannanoa Valley Museum. Over
2,000 visitors went through the museum from mid-April to the end of
October. We hosted almost 50 elementary-age classes from local schools.
We updated exhibits. We held 35 hiking and daycation events to high and
historic places. We continued to preserve the history of the Swannanoa
Valley through photographs, interviews, artifacts, documents, exhibits,
and programs.
We are planning to do even more in 2012. Some of our favorite upcoming projects include:
offering more unique hikes and daycations,
creating hands-on lesson plans to better serve the children in our community,
renovating our older exhibits as well as developing new exhibits,
starting an exciting, new project to document the history of the North Fork Watershed,
and working to collect and preserve more Swannanoa valley artifacts and stories.
As
2011 comes to a close, please consider the Swannanoa Valley Museum for
your tax-deductible donations. Any amount you can contribute will give
us a significant boost as we finish out the year and set our course for
2012. If this is possible for you, we would appreciate you remembering
the Swannanoa Valley Museum this holiday season. Click Here to Donate Now.
