 | Museum Opens for the Season this Saturday--April 16!
When
we open on April 16, we will not only be celebrating our many new
exhibits and displays (see below), but also the 90th birthdays of
two of our founding members--Harriet Styles and Bill McMurray--as well
as our building, constructed in 1921.
Come celebrate with us from 10am to 4pm and enjoy a slice of birthday cake provided by Black Mountain Bakery!
Our new exhibits include:
100 Years of Scouting
This
exhibit will honor the centennials of both the Boy Scouts (2011) and
Girl Scouts (2012). Vintage uniforms and memorabilia collected
from residents and the local Scout councils will be on display.
This exhibit is sure to be nostalgic for visitors who have been active
in these Scouting programs during their lifetimes and a way for
present-day Scouts to appreciate the long history of their
organizations.
Brother, Brother, Brother, War is Not the Answer
Our
Museums In Partnership themed exhibit for 2011 is part of a national
commemoration of the sesquicentennial of the Civil War. Although
there was no battle action in the Swannanoa Valley, many men from the
Valley served in the war, and we will have letters from them and their
families as part of the exhibit.
Pathways from the Past, Pathways to the Future
This
major update of the Museum's permanent exhibit will interpret the
collection and the story of the development of the Swannanoa Valley
since prehistory along the theme of "Pathways." |

 | Seven Sisters Cinema presents "Atlantic"
Seven
Sisters Cinema, a division of Serpent Child Ensemble, will present a
preview screening of Neil Hutcheson's latest documentary in progress,
"Atlantic."
Thursday, April 21st at 7 PM
White Horse Black Mountain.
TICKETS: $5 adult, $3 student
Along
the jagged coastline of North Carolina's Core Sound lies a string of
small fishing villages, collectively known as “Down East.” Most families
here can trace their ancestry to the earliest European land claims in
the area, and for many generations have worked the adjacent waters in
boats built by hand from indigenous trees. Characterized by a
rugged independence forged in isolation, locals continue to eke a living
from the water, braving the unpredictable weather, the treacherous
character of the waterways, the seasonal variability in fish stock, and
an ever-declining market for their catch.
Now
the Core-Sounders suddenly find themselves at the center of a massive
land grab by developers. Overcoming their own stubborn independence,
historic rivalries between their communities, and a wariness of
government intervention, the residents have organized to resist
unwelcome development and to petition their county and state leaders for
assistance. A portrait of a community in crisis and the inner workings
of local government, raising difficult questions about the handling of
special cultural and ecological areas in the United States.
A short preview trailer from the film Atlantic can be seen on YouTube.

Our Sponsor
On
Opening Day 2011, the Swannanoa Valley Museum will be celebrating the
90th birthdays of Harriet Styles and Bill McMurray--two of the Museum's
founding members who have been integral in creating this incredible
community resource to preserve our history.
Please
join me in celebrating Harriet and Bill on Saturday and thanking them
for the many years of service they have given, not only to the Museum,
but to the community as a whole.
As Black Mountain′s oldest continuing business (since 1908) and its
only locally owned community bank, we are very proud to be the sponsor
of the Swannanoa Valley Museum′s e-newsletter.
Cheers!
